The Development Office seeks a full-time Director of Communications to think creatively and strategically, supporting the various departments of the School in their communication needs.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in communications and marketing with a creative and comprehensive approach. This person will be adept at content creation and a variety of software tools to execute large projects and daily tasks within the Development Office. Additionally, the Director of Communications must possess an enthusiastic commitment to the importance of building and sustaining a diverse, just, inclusive, and equitable academic environment.

General Summary: 

Under the general direction of the Director of Development, the Director of Communications is responsible for managing School-wide branding and communications, photography needs, publication management, content creation and other related duties within the Development Office. Collaborating with all departments and divisions of the School, this position is critical to documenting the spirit of the School, publishing and printing high-quality content and materials for the various members of Collegiate. This full-time position may occasionally require weekend or week night work.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensures the integrity of the School’s visual identity through maintenance of a School-wide style guide, use of logos, logotype, colors, etc.;  
  • Oversees inventory of stationery needs for the School;
  • Manages all School communication, digitally and via mail, including the set-up of bulk emails, creation of a school-wide bulk email calendar, and by providing assistance to faculty and leadership in ensuring communication is strategic and aligned; 
  • Oversees the production, design, and planning of all Collegiate publications, with an eye to ensuring accuracy, timeliness as well as consistency in both design and content. 
  • Acts as primary reporter, writer, and editor for all online and printed publications and materials for school events; on some publications provide production and design support. Publications might Include: Collegiate magazine, digital annual report, annual fund and special event collateral and support for our admissions and alumni relations needs;
  • Selects, supervises, and handles bidding and budgets for designers, printers, direct mail house and other vendors;
  • Designs materials in-house as needed;
  • Works with the School’s leadership to develop and maintain an effective communications strategy that makes use of available technology;
  • Serves as school photographer at all major events as well as photographing and videoing “school life” scenes used online and in publications;
  • Oversees development and archiving of all photographs;
  • Manages professional and parent photographers/videographers who come to the School several times per year;
  • Serves as the School’s webmaster updating and maintaining the School’s website;
  • Regularly writes news stories for the site, edit content, and refresh imagery;
  • Strategically manages the School’s social media presence planning posts in advance to promote current news and on-goings at the School;
  • Assists with planning of special events, hiring and overseeing vendors who may livestream and/or provide A/V support throughout the year.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, marketing or related field required. Master’s degree or higher preferred. Must possess a minimum of five years of web and communications experience. Experience with digital photography, InDesign, Canva, Blackbaud Educational Management Solutions and Finalsite/Composer preferred.

  • Ability and willingness to participate fully in a dynamic day school located in New York City;
  • Knowledge of communications best practices and web communications trends;
  • General knowledge of content management systems and related technologies as they apply to K-12 education;
  • Knowledge of photography or a willingness to learn;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage own schedule;

  • Creative and strategic thinking abilities;
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing;
