Location: Remote (Illinois residents preferred)
AOCS is a global scientific membership organization advancing the science of oils, fats, proteins, surfactants, and related materials, serving industry, academia, and government through its journals, conferences, and professional education. Headquartered in Champaign, IL.
Position Summary
The Managing Editor is the primary operational leader for AOCS's scholarly publishing program, serving as the central liaison between Editors-in-Chief, editorial boards, Society leadership, and the publishing partner. This role drives portfolio-wide operational improvements, journal performance, and strategic growth.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor journal KPIs (submissions, peer review, timelines) and report performance to leadership and editorial boards.
Serve as primary liaison between EICs and the publisher; resolve editorial and operational issues; coordinate portfolio review meetings.
Support EICs with annual goals, editorial board recruitment, and identifying special issues and emerging research areas.
Lead reviewer recruitment, training, and retention; monitor reviewer performance metrics.
Improve author experience and submission growth through workflow analysis and targeted recruitment.
Support journal positioning, content calendars, and competitive/market analysis.
Integrate journal activities into Society communications, conferences, and marketing.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required (advanced degree preferred); experience in scholarly publishing, journal management, or research administration; strong project management, analytical, and communication skills; ability to manage multiple stakeholders.
